3 Things for Wood Buffalo is a movement sponsored and promoted by people just like you!
Those who want to make positive change in their community – 3 things at a time. After being inspired by the 3 Things for Calgary movement, a local group of social profit and government representatives; along with community influences got the ball rolling in 2014, and set the stage for a movement like Wood Buffalo had never seen!
How do I get involved?
The concept is simple:
1) Take just 3 actions to make your community a better place to live, work, and play.
2) It can be anything that makes your community better!
3) Then tell others by posting your actions online to inspire them.
The 3 actions can be anything from donating to a local charity, to giving a thank-you wave in traffic; to hosting a fundraiser- the options are endless.
BUT there’s more ...
Participants are encouraged to share their actions with those around them through conversations,
posts, photos, or even short videos on the Twitter or Facebook pages. It’s through sharing that
we inspire others, and create a culture of change.

“Wood Buffalo is such a fantastic place to live and I love exploring it with my new husband
Jason and all of our awesome friends and family! There is never a dull moment and always tons
of excitement from the festivals, events and all around great times to be had just outside our
doors made possible by countless volunteers!”

“I have volunteered in the community, meeting new people of all ages who are so passionate and
caring for the wellbeing of others. I have had to adjust to my son and family moving back to
Nova Scotia this year and I have received such love and support from one particular friend. Generosity and kindness are qualities I have enjoyed from many people in Fort McMurray.”

“I have hosted the community jam sessions at the Royal Canadian Legion on Saturday nights for
the past seven years. We often collect donations from the sessions to give to different community
causes and community agencies. We started doing this in 2013 and have distributed over $10,000
back into the community. The community jams offer a great social network venue for newcomers and old timers alike, and music is the tool that is used to bring the community together. I love it!
The best thing that people have done for me is to come out and support our community jams. We
have awesome musicians here who come together to play at seniors events, Rotary House and
the Hospital for no charge. There is nothing that charges my heart more than to see the smiles,
joy and toe tapping that we bring to our community through the music we offer.”

“I love spending time with people who are new to the community to tell them about all the
hidden treasures in town, or volunteering to provide impromptu city tours. It’s the least I can do
for the generosity I see from others, and how they have helped me. My car has broken down a lot this year, but I am constantly offered rides. People have even offered me their cars to help me out. The generosity of this region is overwhelming.”

"While some know me as McMurray Musings, community blogger, I'm really Theresa Wells, proud resident of Wood Buffalo. Over the past 13 years of calling this region home I've been honoured to share stories about this region with local, provincial, national and even global audiences. Writing about this region and the residents has been a tremendous gift. Each person who has allowed me to share their story has helped me to tell the narrative of this community to the world. I have been the recipient of so much kindness and generosity, including all those who open their homes and hearts to me with faith that I will share their stories in a respectful and honest way. A writer is only as good as their material permits, and the people of this region are the most wonderful resource a writer could ever want!"
